Text description provided by the architects. The result of a research and development project, the Gomos modular system is an effective response to the contemporary need to simplify and speed up the construction process. Composed of reinforced concrete modules, it is a scalable system in which each module leaves the factory completely ready, including all interior and exterior finishes, insulation, window frames, water and electricity and even the fixed furniture pieces. The on site assembly can be completed in just a few days by joining the modules together. The construction process can thus be broken down into four phases: production of the structure; installation of finishes and facilities; transportation; and assembly.
From a technical perspective, we have chosen to highlight four essential factors that drive the development of this project:
Flexibility: The design makes this a flexible system that can be used for various functions in addition to housing. The system also allows for new extensions that can be added onto the building post-construction and the modules can be adapted to different land conditions.
Ease of Transport: The size of the modules is designed to comply with all applicable laws and also to facilitate ease of transportation.
Energy Efficiency: Both the inner sub divisions, which allow for natural ventilation corridors, and the modules' insulation, lighting and climate control, result in a building that has low energy consumption.
Constructive Quality: All of the building’s components are produced in a factory environment -- under highly controlled conditions and in accordance with previously tested solutions -- avoiding problems that can often occur in traditional construction.
The development of this project is the result of a partnership between 20 companies specialising in different areas, from prefabrication to technology and industrial automation, taking advantage of the know-how of each company to enhance every feature of the system. The first unit, built in Arouca, Portugal, demonstrates a key aspect of this project: the important thing isn’t the end result, but rather the simplification and efficiency of the entire construction process.
